Tether's networks: TRC20, ERC20 and BEP20

Tether exists on several separate blockchains. Choosing the wrong network is the most common way to lose funds — and it usually cannot be undone.

One tether, three networks

Tether on TRC20 (the Tron network), ERC20 (Ethereum) and BEP20 (BNB Chain) is worth the same, but the three networks are not connected. Tether sent on one network only arrives on that network.

How they differ

  • TRC20: addresses start with T. Network fees are usually low and transfers quick; the most used network for tether in Iran.
  • ERC20: addresses start with 0x. Network fees are usually higher and rise when Ethereum is busy.
  • BEP20: addresses also start with 0x. Fees are usually low.

ERC20 and BEP20 addresses look the same. A receiving wallet may accept the address and still be on the other network; the address's shape does not tell you the network is right.

Before every transfer

  1. 1Check which network the receiving wallet or exchange supports for tether.
  2. 2Choose that same network here. The network is repeated beside the deposit address so it is not missed.
  3. 3For large amounts, send a small amount first and see it arrive.

Confirmations

A tether deposit is credited once the network has confirmed the transaction a set number of blocks deep. The number differs by network and is set by the exchange. If a transaction goes backwards in a chain reorganisation after being credited, the platform detects it and corrects it.
